News for the Week of July 10, 2008

New Comic Day will be Thursday instead of Wednesday this week due to the holiday!

Rick’s Writin’s
Hope everybody still has all their fingers and toes after this weekend. It's been nice for me to have a bit of time off, though since I'm not used to it, I don't really know quite what to do. I have relaxed some and got stuff done too. So far so good, and the neighbors stowed the fireworks and went to bed at a reasonable time last night so Ollie was able to calm down and we both slept well. I do have a question on fireworks, and I probably brought this up last year too. Why do so many folks that blow off fireworks leave the garbage in the streets? Here we are celebrating our great country and Independence Day, and what do we do? Litter the entire country up with fireworks garbage. I don't get it. You can't tell me these folks don't know what littering is. It's not Independence Day from your responsibilities as a citizen. Some of these folks are teaching their children it's OK to litter, as long as it's just blowing stuff up once a year. What about the CHILDREN??? I say stick a broom in their hands and tell them to go earn their keep. What's so tough about that? What do they think? These fireworks shows are free? That firecrackers grow on trees?? There's always kids watching the adults blow stuff up, and sometimes they even get to help…put them to work afterward and everybody, including your non-littering neighbor, will be happy. And, you'll have that glow that comes from doing the right thing. Just don't have it be one o'clock in the morning. My God Man, sleepy children can't sweep worth a crap. What's the matter with you?
As we mentioned last week, comics will be in on Thursday this week (July 10th) due to the above mentioned Independence Day Holiday and its aftermath. Lots of small odd ball stuff thrown in with the biggies this week, and we are getting in some Green Lantern action figures for you Lantern Fans. We don't get many figures but this batch has Sinestro, Star Sapphire, Cyborg Superman and Batman as Green Lantern, all from the Sinestro Corps War story. I think they look pretty good, and I'll be having me that Batman. As far as Bats goes, the RIP story jumps over to Detective (#846) this week, the first part not in the main Batman title. There will be other RIP story parts in up coming Robin, Nightwing and even Batman and the Outsiders issues, so keep an eye out. We'll also try to give a heads up on those too. The Justice Society (#17) has recently met GOG in the on-going Kingdom Come sequel. Does this mean Magog is not far behind? Tune in! Final Crisis has the first of its sideline issues this week with Final Crisis Requiem, a One-shot honoring the recent fallen hero whose name I can't mention without giving away story. (It's not Flash...yet.) Batgirl has been learning just how tough Catwoman is, and vise versa in the story of their first meeting, part three of which is in this week's Batman Confidential (#19). The art is fun, done by Kevin Maguire (Formerly Justice League), who is great at unique and funny facial expressions on his characters. I really enjoy his work. He captures the characters and the moment.
It seems Secret Invasion is a secret, as I don't hear much talk about what's going on in the story. Guess I'll have to read it to find out. This week is issue #4. It is selling well, so that's good for me and Paula. Without spilling the beans story-wise, please let us know if you're liking it. We can't read everything, so sometimes we rely on word of mouth and input from our customers to help us help other customers, or to order properly. Ultimate Origins (#2 of 5), telling the story of how the Ultimate Universe started, and Amazing Spider-Man (#565) introducing a new secret villain are the other Marvel's of note. I'll also mention Captain America: White by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale, but it's a #0 issue, and honestly, I can't stand #0 issues. We don't need an extra $2.99 or more preview #0 issue. Just start the story already. These are extremely hard to figure order wise too. If the #0 doesn't sell well, it causes you to perhaps order too light on the #1 issue that now every body wants, but you don't have because the #0 issue didn't sell. If you don't order the #0, everybody asks for that, because they want to see the project, but many times they don't really want to buy a #0 sketch and interview book with little story. I know, BOOO Hooo Hooo, poor comic shop monkey and his order problems. But hey, it's not all just sitting around reading comics either...though that would be nice. 'Til next week, remember...it's all about THE CHILDREN!!

Paula’s Picks
We’re getting a bunch of new books this Thursday (not Wednesday). Hellboy II comes out next weekend. I’m super excited! We’re getting in a couple of Hellboy related books. BPRD The Warning #1 and Hellboy Oddest Jobs. Hellboy Oddest Jobs is a collection of short stories about Hellboy by various horror authors and features illustrations by Mike Mignola. This is the third collection of short stories Dark Horse has produced (Odd Jobs and Odder Jobs being the other two). They’ve been really good, creepy stories.
We’re getting yet another Minx book this week. I finished Burnout (a really good story about teens and eco-terrorism) and haven’t even started Water Baby! New York Four is written by Brian Wood (Northlanders, DMZ, Demo) with art by Ryan Kelly (Local). It’s about a girl going to NYU.
We’re also getting Bone volume 8. I love this series! We’ve been having a lot of kids come in lately, and I cannot recommend this book enough.
Look out Wizard! There’s a new comic magazine in town. We’re getting the newest issue of Comic Foundry this week. I enjoy this magazine. It’s got great articles focusing on comics and creators. It’s full color and fun! Everyone should check it out!
I went to the fireworks at Celebration Park for the 4th. They were pretty cool and we got to walk home through the woods in the dark. We made lots of horror movie jokes. I think I can see the fireworks from my balcony, so I may just stay at home next year and grill instead. That way, I don’t have to sit on wet grass and have Frisbees thrown at my head by kids with bad aim.
