News for the Week of June 18, 2008

Rick’s Writin’s
Sorry guys and gals, I'm off to see the M's try to avoid getting swept against the second worst team in the major leagues. Unfortunately, there is no longer any doubt which is the worst team. Anyhow, I'm running late and have no time to write my comic report. Read Kick Ass, this last issue was something else. A quick glance of the list: A couple Star Wars books, a couple Ultimate books, Batman and the Outsiders (#8) going well, the last of this run's Anita Blake (#12 of 12), Angel (#9), Amazing Spidey (#563), Birds of Prey (#119) as well as this weeks Trinity (#3). Sorry again for the abbreviated column. See you next week. Paula will hopefully pick up the slack here.

Paula’s Picks
Ha! Me? Pick up the slack? When do I ever….oh wait…yeah! I ALWAYS pick up the slack! Luckily I’ve got plenty to write about today!
First, I FINALLY rode my bike to work today! Yippee! I’m still not good at the hills, so I walked up those, but even so, it only took me 15 minutes to get here. I got to enjoy the sunshine and found the tree that supplies all of Federal Way with those little fluffy white cotton fluffy things that float all over the place. My legs are still all wobbly, but I think once I get used to riding my bike, it won’t be so bad. I figure in about a month, I’ll have saved about a gallon and a half in gas. Maybe I’ll take my savings and have a feast at Taco Bell!
Yesterday, I went to a concert. I haven’t gone to a show in a long time. Flogging Molly was in town with Pennywise and they played at a festival put on by some station I don’t listen to. I don’t care! I got to see Flogging Molly! They were great and Pennywise was awesome too! I don’t think I’ve seen Pennywise since I was in college so it was nice to seem them again. And it’s been at least 2 years since I’ve seen Flogging Molly. The bass player has a broken arm, but he still played. There was also a good amount of kids in the crowd. I was standing next to a couple of 13 year old boys that were in the pit for the first time. They were telling me about how “freakin’ nice everyone” in the pit is. Those were his words exactly. That’s one thing I like about punk rock shows. From the outside, the pit looks like this crazy dangerous place with a bunch of people just hitting each other. But it’s not. Usually (unless someone is completely clueless jerk), if someone gets hit, the person apologizes and all is forgiven. If someone falls down, everyone stops and helps the person up. If someone needs to tie their shoe, people create a wall to keep others from falling on them. I’ve been at shows where I’ve gotten my glasses knocked off and everyone around me helped me find them. I’ve never had a pair broken at a show. I don’t go into the pit so much any more. I mostly hang out at the edge. It’s a great place to breathe.
I also caught up on some of my reading this weekend. I read the last couple of issues of Wonder Woman. Is anyone else as confused as I am? I also read my Buffy and I saw that Fray shows up in the next issue. “Who’s Fray?” you might ask. Well, I’m glad you asked. You should read the trade paperback Fray to find out! It’s about a slayer in the future that has the Scythe that Buffy has now. I read this book before I watched any Buffy (I thought her hair looked cool). I’ll have to go back and re-read it to refresh my memory and understand some things I didn’t get before.
As for this week, we’re getting Astonishing X-Men volume 4 trade paperback. This book collects the last Joss Whedon story arc. This is one of the books I wait until the trade comes out before I read it, so I can’t wait. The last book was hilarious! We’re also getting the final Y: The Last Man trade paperback. So, once you’ve got it and read it, go back and re-read the series again! Brian K. Vaughan has been hinting throughout the entire series about what is going to happen. But, he does it so well, that you blow it off. “Oh, that person is just crazy” when you find out that they’re completely right 10 issues later. I also have a question for everyone. DC is offering a hardcover of the Y: The Last Man series. Each hardcover collects 2 of the softcovers and the first one is $29.99. The question is: Are you interested? We’d like to know because we don’t think many people are going to be interested so we’re probably going to order really light unless we here otherwise. So, if you want one, please place your order by the 27th of June. I hate puppies.
