News for the Week of May 21, 2008
Rick’s Writin’s
In a classic case of needing to be careful what you wish for, I was wanting
the weather to warm up a bit. I guess I figured a bit wasn't 30-35 degrees
in two days. I like 65, maybe 70 degrees tops. You can keep your 80+,
that's not why I live here. I do find it funny though, that no matter
what the weather, it spells disaster for the TV news crews. "It's
going to reach 80...will there be flooding due to snow melt off?? Tune
in at 11 to see if you'll need your rubbers." "Temperatures
dropping...are you living at the top of a mountain that may get snow??
Tune in at 11 to see just how many flakes you're likely to get".
"Summer's on the way. Does this mean more boating accidents?? Tune
in at 11..." Also in the news: The Firwood Roadhouse is all burned
up, actually all burned down. I drove by that place almost everyday, to
and from work since I've moved out here to Puyallup. Never went in, but
I was wanting to. It's only been open about three weeks or a month since
it had been shut down for health violations in December. I'll bet something
hincky went on. The Feds and coppers are checking it, and I'd place money
down that it's arson, with a side bet that ownership is involved. Just
a hunch. (Some Knucklehead is racing around my neighborhood on one of
those loud and obnoxious motorized skateboard scooters. He'd better stay
off my freakin' lawn! Dag nab it!!)
Thanks to all of you that stopped by our booth at Emerald City Con, or
inquired how we did at the show. It went very well, thanks very much.
Paula almost wet her pants meeting Jamie Bamber from Battlestar Galactica,
(you shoulda been there!) and she'll rightfully say I won't shut up about
getting a hug from my live fantasy girlfriend Gigi Edgley: Chiana on Farscape.
Aside from those two highlights, we both worked very hard, as the show,
particularly Saturday, was busy busy bee (Insert inside joke here!) Unfortunately,
we didn't get out to most of the Con, so we're going to try and remedy
that next year (first weekend in April, same place, Seattle Convention
Center downtown).
The Indiana Jones movie opens this next weekend, and the comics adaptation
arrives this week, from Dark Horse. It'll be a two issue set, kinda expensive
at $5.99, but hopefully worth it. I'm looking forward to the movie for
sure. Marvel has more Secret Invasion story, including Mighty Avengers
(#14) and Skrully variants on other books. There are a couple of Ultimate
books, the second part of X-Men: Divided We Stand, Captain America (#38)
and Amazing Spidey (#560) too. Arcana Publishing is releasing Burn (#1)
notable because it is written by one of our customers Scott Sanders. Scott
is a great example of how working hard and networking can pay off and
make the dream come true. He's a talented regular Joe that kept at it,
and now he's had his first comic published. See dreamers!! It CAN be done!!
Congrats Scott!!! Other noteworthy books: Two of my favs lately, Batman
and the Outsiders (#7) and Bird's of Prey (#118) from DC, and also both
Justice League (#21, I have no idea what the story is at present, I'm
soooo far behind) and JSA (#15) which still continues the Kingdom Come
sequel, GOG now on the scene. Star Wars fans get SW Legacy (#24) and everybody
gets lots of other delights to pick from. Enjoy!
Paula’s Picks
The show was great! Thanks to everyone that stopped by! It was nice seeing
a bunch of people that I haven’t seen in a long time. I did get
to meet Jamie Bamber and all I could spit out was I like the show and
thank you about 10 times. Note to self: I’m not allowed to meet
actors. I do okay with comic writers and artists. I got to talk to Dustin
Nguyen. He’s doing the art for Detective Comics right now. What
a great guy! He was so nice and friendly. I need to start reading Detective
now! It’s amazing how sometimes meeting a writer or artist can totally
change your outlook on their work. I’ve had some people that I wasn’t
too familiar with their stuff, but once I met them, I had to read it.
We got in a great graphic novel last week, Life Sucks. It’s a story
about a guy that works in a convenience store after being turned into
a vampire by the owner of the store. It’s a fun story that plays
with the vampire stereotype. I’ve gotten about half way through
it and I’m really enjoying it so far.
Congrats to Scott for his new comic coming out this week: Burn. We got
a copy from Scott at the show. I haven’t had a chance to read it
yet (bad Paula!), but the story sounds interesting and the art looks really
good.
Terry Moore’s Echo #3 is coming in this week. I’ve really
enjoyed the first couple of issues. I can’t wait for Terry Moore
to take over on Runaways.
I finally saw Iron Man this weekend. What a great movie! If only the teenagers
in the row in front of us would stop texting during the movie. It’s
almost as bad as talking! You’re watching this movie, a cool scene
is on and all of sudden, there’s this bright glow in your face like
a flashlight! Very irritating. I like the turn off your cell phone ads
they’ve been playing before the movie, now they need to add something
about texting and checking your messages. That’s the main reason
I don’t go to the movies anymore. Why should I pay ten bucks to
see a movie that will be constantly interrupted by talkers, screaming
babies and bright cell phone screens? I wouldn’t mind paying that
kind of money if I were guaranteed a pleasant movie experience. |
