Emerald City Comic Con is only three, count ‘em, one, two, Three weeks away!! We still have tickets available, but don’t delay too long. I’m guessing it’s possible we’ll run out before the end and remember, aside from the hassle, it’s more expensive to buy them at the door. It’s been a great week, what with our weather being wonderfully spring like, and the Olympics going on. Our comic week was decent and this one coming is very good, which I will get to shortly. I did have some observations as went about my merry way: 1. If you are a pedestrian crossing the road at night and wearing dark clothing, it is very hazardous to your health to stop in the middle of the crosswalk to light your cigarette. I still don’t know how the car in front of me avoided hitting that knucklehead, and I almost rear-ended that car. If I had rear-ended the car, Smokey Joe’s health would’ve been in danger not only from cigarettes, or cars, but from me. 2. A hand crushing handshake does not make you more of a macho man, but a limp noodle hand shake DOES make you less of one. Weird. 3. No matter that I’ve seen it 30 times or more, every time I run across “The Bridge On The River Kwai” (1957 Academy Award winner for Best Picture and Best Actor Alec Guinness plus 5 more), I have to stop and watch for a while. I think most all of us have a movie or two like that. It’s the same for me with either of the first two “Godfather “movies and “Casablanca” as well. What are some of yours? Comment and we’ll get them posted. Perhaps the submissions will turn some folks on to new films they haven’t seen. As I said above it’s a good comic week coming so let’s get to that:
This is load up week, with multiple Siege and Blackest Night pieces along with other highlights and a new Previews. Blackest Night (#7 of
On the Marvel front, the Siege story has a few pieces too. Both the Avengers Initiative (#33) and New Avengers (#62) have their problems with The Hood, fractioning the Initiative and hindering the team’s attempt to prevent Norman Osborn’s troops from conquering Asgard. According to the solicitation for Thor (#607) Asgard, home of the Gods, is in Oklahoma (who’d a thunk?) and Thor has worries about the impact Norman Osborn’s battle for Asgard will have on it’s neighboring town, Broxton, Oklahoma. Will one or more of the Okkies step up to put their boot in Osborn’s rear? Let’s hope so. The Thunderbolts (#141) are also involved as Osborn sends them to Asgard to battle the Mighty Avengers. Daken, Dark Wolverine (#83) isn’t left out of the mix as he’s actually right in the middle of it all and still hasn’t figured out whose side he’s on. He’d better get a clue soon, or he won’t make it out. X fans have two pieces of the X Necrosha story, with X Force (#24) providing part five of six, with one of the team biting the dust as they try to save other X Force teammates from the clutches of the Black Queen, and in X Men Legacy (#233), Proteus returns to mutant home Muir Island, and though I have no idea who he is, the X Men do, and they need to stop him in this X Necrosha tie-in issue. There’s some Fall of The Hulks too, with the second issue of Fall of the Hulks: Red Hulk mini (#2 of 4) as well as Spidey (#622) Fantastic Four (#576) and plenty more. Again, please see the list below for more of your Marvel faves.
Can’t just walk away without mentioning Mark Waid’s Irredeemable (#11) from Boom Studios and a new one from writer Warren Ellis and publisher Avatar called Captain Swing (#1 of 4), though it’s full name is Captain Swing and the Electrical Pirates of Cindery Island. The setting is London, 1830 and our hero is new policeman Charlie Gravel, and our man is seeing things he’s not supposed to be seeing, such as flying objects. There’s a lot going on here, and there’s Pirates! The art is done in a woodcut style by Raulo Caceres and the look of the book is definitely olde tyme. Should be a good one! That’s it for now.
Paula’s Picks
My two “gotta stop and watch them” movies are The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes’ Smarter Brother and Pirates of the Caribbean.
I’m really excited that there’s a Peter & Max audio book coming out this week. It’s the Peter & Max: A Fables Novel by Bill Willingham in audio book format. It’s read by Wil Wheaton (Wesley Crusher from Star Trek TNG). So, if you “don’t have time to read full length novels,” that can no longer be your excuse to have not read this awesome book!
So I know I said a few weeks ago that I was going to start reading Amazing Spider-Man. Well, I did! I got (mostly) caught up on the Gauntlet story. I’m 2 issues behind right now. I really enjoyed it. It was fun and funny and introduced me to some classic Spidey villains. I also like how if something was really important, it would be explained (and how if it wasn’t, they would point you to the issue if you wanted to read it). This week’s Amazing Spider-Man #622 focuses on Flash Thompson and Morbius. Looks like I better catch up!
Irredeemable #11 is coming out this week as well. What an amazing series! We still haven’t found out the Plutonians weakness yet, but we’re getting closer. Mark Waid is going to be at Emerald City Comicon. I hope I have time to go talk to him about this series. Speaking of Emerald City . . .
For those of you interested in getting a Stan Lee autograph at the show, I want to make sure that you know you need to buy a special ticket in advance for that. You won’t be able to just stand in line and get an autograph. Check out the Emerald City Comicon website (www.emeraldcitycomicon.com) for complete details. We won’t have those tickets on sale here; we just have the entry tickets (which are separate from the Stan Lee autograph tickets). Yeah, I know I just copied this part from last weeks newsletter, but I do think it’s very important. While I’m at it . . .

To be honest, I don’t know that I have any “gotta watch” movies. I enjoy movies as much as the next person, but I don’t really want to spend the time rewatching something I’ve seen recently. I have too many other things keeping me busy. To keep with the spirit of question, maybe if I reword the question to be movies I’d enjoy seeing again — Its a Wonderful Life (a movie you just can’t go wrong with and I find it fascinating (and a bit scary) that I’ve run into so many people like Mr. Potter), the original Star Wars (yeah, the acting is not great, but “kids” today don’t get that in 1977 there weren’t any science fiction to speak of on the big screen and not to mention this was before computer graphics and they had to make the movie with “real” special effects), and Star Trek: the Wrath of Khan (arguably the best Star Trek movie).
Late though it may be, at least Flash Rebirth #6 is coming out before the new Flash #1 (unlike Captain America and Reborn).
I would have to say Seven would be the movie that I have to stop and watch if I see it on. In fact it got me just about a week ago on IFC.
