Rick’s Writin’s
No time to babble and blather…football’s on and there is a HUMONGOUS comic week to write about. There’s something for everybody this time. I sure wish things were spread out a bit more but with all the different events going on and so much story to tell, I’m pleased to have the stuff as opposed to it being late and not having it, as for example Kick Ass (#8) which IS in this week, finally. Much worry from folks about the story not being finished before the movie came out. No worries now. I can’t wait to read it as it’s been “kick ass”. I’d say worth the wait, but I don’t want to encourage lateness. The trade will be coming in mid-February for those of you that missed the issues and want to read it before the movie comes out April 16th. Blackest Night…we got that.  Green Lantern (#50) has Hal up against Black Lantern Spectre and Red (rage) Lantern Atrocitus reveals a secret in this over-sized 50th issue special. The Justice Society’s tie to Earth 2 is a problem in Blackest Night JSA (#2 of 3) as Black Lantern Lois Lane is looking for her hubby Black Lantern Superman, and former Earth 2 hero Power Girl is in her way. Bad news for PG. We’ll also have the last of the “last issue” Blackest Night books with Atom and Hawkman (#46), though Hawkman here is a Black Lantern and he’s brought Black Lantern Hawkgirl with him, along with a couple other pals, much to Atom’s delight.

Siege?? We got that too. New Avengers (#61) has Steve Rogers (formerly dead Captain America) rejoining the group as they try to stop Norman Osborn’s try to take down Asgard and its gods. There’s also a Siege Heroes and Villains one-shot handbook. Back to Steve Rogers. As most of us know, Captain America Reborn (#6) the official return of Steve Rogers was late, though it shows up this week, only two weeks after the aftermath of the Reborn story was released in the “Who Will Wield the Shield” one shot. How Marvel could botch the return of Cap is beyond my comprehension, especially after so much hype. No excuses except greed, for pushing Reborn to six issues from its original five, the way I see it. What about Fall of the Hulks? Yup! That too. Fall of the Hulks Red Hulk (#1 of 4) mini arrives, with secrets revealed and Red Hulk’s hidden plans part of the mix, as is a Cosmic Hulk ROBOT! ooohhh!! Nation X? Nope, sorry. X Necrosha?? Uh Huh. X-Men Legacy (#232) has Black Queen Selene bringing back to life a well known villain, but said villain doesn’t want to be part of her plans. In X-Force (#31) the team concludes that Black Queen Selene must be killed, and Wolverine leads the crew to do it. There’s plenty more: Two Justice League books: (#41) with two covers and a brand new team. This restart, with writer James Robinson (Starman) and art by former Ultimate Spider-man artist Mark Bagley, features a team with Batman (Dick Grayson), Green Lantern (Hal Jordan), former Titans Donna Troy and Starfire, Green Arrow,  Mon-El,  giant monkey Congorilla (?) and more. Gotta love talking monkeys. Justcie League: Cry for Justice (#6 of 7) the beautifully painted book that I haven’t read yet, is nearing it’s end as the villain Prometheus is even more villain-y than the JLA thought he could be. Talk about villainy…Irredeemable (#10) has the Plutonian, a Superman type hero, gone completely over to the dark side and I mean completely. In Gotham City, Batman and Robin (#7) are joined by Knight and Squire as well as Batwoman as writer Grant Morrison starts a new story “Blackest Knight” hahahaha…..hmmm. Still, this story has clues to the “death” of Bruce Wayne, so I’m there. Detective (#861) also starts a new story about a vicious attacker with both Batwoman and Batman on the case, and the Gotham City Sirens (#8) are still trying to figure out if The Riddler is their pal or their enemy as there’s still somebody trying to kill them. Last item: the conclusion of the Archie (#605) gets married story arrives, though there will be an epilogue next issue. I hope that Archie comics can keep some interest as it’s been nice to see Archie selling well. I think it’d be tough to do, but I hope they can figure it out. Plus, New Previews and Wizard magazines too, for those that like to see the future. Check the list below please as there’s a ton more stuff I didn’t have room to mention. Off we go until next time…

Paula’s Picks

Emerald City Comicon is coming up in about 6 weeks (March 13th & 14th). I’ve noticed that many people are getting ready for it: gathering up items to have signed and talking about who they’re going to see. We’ve got tickets for sale here at the shop as well! Stan Lee is going to be there (Saturday only!). Leonard Nemoy and Lou Ferrigno are a couple of other media guests. Some of the comics people are Jhonen Vasquez (his line will wrap the convention center), Ed Brubaker, Tim Sale, Tim Seely, JH Williams III and many others. Felicia Day (from the Guild, Dr. Horrible & Buffy) is going to be there! I’m really excited to meet her! She wrote a song for the Guild that I love! It’s a great geeky song.

Speaking of geeky songs, I want to get together a collection of geeky songs. I’m hoping you will be able to help. Let me know about some songs that you consider geeky. It’d be great if I could get a playlist long enough to get through Wednesday! Some of the ones I know of are Weezer’s “In the Garage” and Blink 182’s “A New Hope.” There’s got to be more out there! They don’t have to be by popular bands either, as long as they’re good and geeky!

Irredeemable #10 comes out this week. This is now the book that I most look forward to! In this issue, we finally find out what’s going on between the Plutonian, Bette and Gilgamos.
We’ve got just a few first issues coming out this week. Ultimate Comics Enemy #1 (of 4) is written by Brian Michael Bendis. In this series, we find out who the Big Bad is of the Ultimate Universe. Fall of the Hulks: Red Hulk #1 (of 4) is a new mini-series that focuses on the Red Hulk’s part in the Fall of the Hulk series. Wolverine: Wendigo #1 is a one-shot. It tells the story of a white monster tearing apart a film crew told by two survivors to the police. It looks like an interesting way to tell a story. I often wonder about how in movies when something unexplainable happens how do they explain what happened to the authorities. “Gee officer, this guy summoned a demon and so I had to burn the building down to save the world.” Really? Would that fly?

In the current Previews book (not the new one coming out this week), there are some really awesome Green Lantern rings being offered. They are made of PVC (hard plastic), but they have lights inside! When you put them on your finger, they light up! They’re pretty cool! If you want to see pictures or want to know more, we have an ad for them at the counter. They are also offering some really nice Blackest Night posters as well. Let us know if you’re interested in either of these since they are things we don’t normally carry. We want to have enough for everyone!

“How Marvel could botch the return of Cap is beyond my comprehension, especially after so much hype”

He just Died! They should have waited a while to bring him back. As a reader I have a very low tolerance for lame publicity stunts. I understand the need to promote what you’re selling but if you’re gonna make a big deal about his death, there needs to be a big gap of time before you hype his return.

  • MoreFun101:

I would definitely agree with Tim. I’d like to see things develop in the Marvel Universe without Steve Rogers for awhile (two years minimum seems reasonable).

I see DC is starting to promote the return of Bruce Wayne so I guess we’ll have to see how DC compares to Marvel in bringing a major hero back from the dead. Considering Bruce’s death was one of the worse (if not the worst) deaths of a major character (would someone explain to me how Grant Morrison gets work… he must have pictures of someone…), I am a little concerned about the entertainment value of Bruce’s return. Also, we have been seeing some interesting character development with Dick and the rest of the Bat-Family in moving on without Bruce. That gets thrown into the trash pile far too quickly for my liking.

  • MC ROSE:

Paula, a good ‘geeky’ song is “Oscar The Grouch” by the Prairie Dog Gangters (an unknown ska band).

  • Spy:

As far as Marvel and Cap are concerned, it doesn’t seem that they thought it through to have the return as an event. Cap Reborn was just a ploy to sell books. His return should’ve been tied to a story arc that involved the entire Marvel Universe. As it was, it was pretty self contained. As for Bruce Wayne and Batman…he isn’t, wasn’t really dead. True, Morrison has to have the goods on somebody, but the Final Crisis “death ” of Batman wasn’t our Batman. I think it’s entirely possible for Bruce to come back, but not return to being Batman. Then the Bat Family character development isn’t wasted. If Bruce wasn’t Batman, how would you use him in the DC Universe? What role would he have? Would he wear a cape? Lots of possibilities.
