Rick’s Writin’s
I have a quibble with the saying, or letters if you will, TMI or Too Much Information!!! You know, when someone overshares a bit of personal business that some listeners would rather not hear. Like how bad the fungus is on their feet, or that they read their comics in the nude surrounded by all twenty-seven of their stuffed animals or that their burps taste like poo. Many would say TMI!! TMI!! I would not. In fact, I would say that there isn’t enough information, and I’d like to question further. Such as: How do you think the fungus started on your feet? Do you wear your socks too much? Or: How is it you came to the ritual of reading your comics in the nude surrounded by twenty-seven stuffed animals? If the reader is female, a follow up question: Is there room for a twenty- eighth if I can figure out how to turn myself into a stuffed animal? And finally, how come you know what poo tastes like? See…plenty of questions, not anywhere near enough information.

If we’ve been asked once, we’ve been asked FIFTY times, when is Legion of Three Worlds #5 coming??? Why is DC doing this to us??? Etc. Etc…Well, wait no longer friends, for it is upon us. The mind numbing, jaw dropping, pants wetting conclusion to Legion of Three Worlds mini will arrive this Wednesday, July 22nd!!! I knew it had to be soon, as the trade hardcover has already been ordered, so the story must’ve been finished at some point. Besides, Adventure Comics #1, featuring the Legion is coming out in the not too distant future as well. It’ll be nice for us at the shop to not have to say “I don’t know” to “Where is Three Worlds #5?” everyday. EVERY. DAY.

Plenty of other goods coming our way too: Blackest Night has a main installment in Green Lantern (#44), with Hal Jordan and Barry Allen (The Flash) in Gotham City, where an old friend who may not be a friend anymore pops up. Also, the second of three weekly Blackest Night: Tales of the Corps. I’m guessing most of you have heard the news about Ryan Reynolds being cast as Hal Jordan in the up coming Green Lantern movie, and Star Wars’ Padme Amadala herself, Natalie Portman as his girl Carol Farris. I’m wondering if this affects Reynolds starring in a Deadpool movie, the role he had recently in Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine: Origins. My thought was he was too big a name for the smallish part he had as Deadpool in the Wolvie flick and that there were plans for Reynolds to play Deadpool in his own movie. Could still happen, but I wonder if there won’t be a casting change. Can a guy, or girl for that matter, play two big superhero roles, and be able get viewers to separate them. Deadpool and Green Lantern are quite a bit different characters. Good test for an actor, for sure. Maybe it could work if the movies have some time in between releases.

Back on track: Amazing Spider-Man (#600) promises all in Peter Parker’s life will be shook up again, in a Giant 104 page spectacular, with all original stories. That’s right!! 104 pages and NO Reprints. Lots happening too. Guest stars galore, a wedding, villains, cake, even a Stan Lee written story!! Of course there’s variant covers too, including Alex Ross and both Romita Sr. and Jr. Power Girl (#3) finishes up her first story and her battle with the Ultra-Humanite. Roman Dirge’s Lenore, the funny dead embalmed girl, starts a second volume (#1) in color this time around. Roman is a bit slow putting out Lenore, but they’re worth the wait. And, I must mention Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim stars Dethklok, the Metalocalypse show’s Dethmetal band takes on Eric Powell’s The Goon in Dark Horse’s Dethklok vs.The Goon one-shot that’s sure to be lots of fun. I have no idea how they came up with that one but, I’m really looking forward to it. Bunches of other stuff this week too, including a sale price on the HeroClix Fing Fang Foom figure. Many of you have admired the one we have on display behind our counter. Now, we have a few coming that we’ll be able to offer at a great price. Take a look at the list. Later…

Paula’s Picks

Last night I went to the Can’t Stop the Serenity event in Seattle. It was a fundraiser for Equality Now (Joss Whedon’s favorite charity). We saw Serenity on the big screen, then had a little meal and then saw Dr. Horrible’s Sing-A-Long Blog on the big screen. They also had a raffle going for some fun gift baskets. Some people were dressed in costume (including one girl in Kaylee’s shindig dress and a few Mals and some Jayne hats). I got a tip from someone who made a few, so keep an eye out for them here at the shop in the next few months! It was a blast! Speaking of Dr. Horrible, we’re getting MySpace Dark Horse Presents volume 3 which features a Dr. Horrible story as well as a Buffy story. There’s also a story by Mike Mignola.

We’ve been selling out of the Wednesday Comics pretty fast, but the good news is that we’re getting more in stock on Wednesday. We’ll be getting lots of 1s, 2s and new 3s!
Jack of Fables #36 comes out this week with a special guest-writer. Jack is in the jungle in nothing but his underpants and yet becomes king of the jungle. That guy is like McGuyver, except with people instead of paperclips and not very honorable. Well, maybe he’s not like McGuyver then, but it’s just as much fun to see him work his was out of (and into) weird situations.

Mouse Guard Hardcover Volume 2 Winter 1152 finally comes out! Yay! This book is written by and features beautiful art by David Petersen. It follows some mice that live in the wild. It’s full of intrigue and adventure! I can’t wait to read it! Also, last week, we got the Mouse Guard Roleplaying Game. It won the award for Best RPG of the Year at Origins a few weeks ago. All of the art inside is by David Petersen as well.

You Have Killed Me Hardcover comes out this week as well. This is a murder mystery original graphic novel by Jaime S. Rich with art by Joelle Jones. They’ve worked together before on 12 Reasons Why I Love Her (another good read). I think Joelle’s arty style is perfect for this as it seems to be a noir detective story and she usually draws her characters in 50s style clothing. I can’t wait!
