Rick’s Writin’s
It’s Labor Day weekend, meaning half of the gamers in Seattle as well as many from around the world are at PAX, the Penny Arcade Gaming Expo held at the Seattle Convention center. I thought Seattle was doing great when Emerald City Comic Con broke the 10,000 people attendance level. When I found out that PAX attendees number 75,000+ I was blown away. That’s fantastic! I’m pleased that Seattle can support a convention at that level, and a niche crowd to boot. Gaming isn’t really a niche though, with so many types of games and PAX has them all. Video, on-line, RPG, card games, miniatures, and board games as well. There is a down side though. As a comic guy I can’t claim a reputation that we’re all hygienically correct, but gamers have an even worse rep in that area. 75,000 attendees’ means there’s a lot of stinky gamers in one place, especially when the convention lasts three days and gaming goes on 24/7. Last year there was the PAX Pox, as quite a few folks caught a flu type bug. I hope that doesn’t happen this year. Paula and her hubby are there, but I haven’t gotten any kind of update so we’ll have to wait for her to report next week.
Labor Day weekend also means comics will be delayed a day this week, out on Thursday Sept. 9th. It also means that we’re going to start our annual Spy Comics September Sales Extravaganza. This year we’re going to try something different and run three different sales, each for one week only, running Wednesdays through the following Tuesday. We’ll start this Wednesday Sept. 8th with a special book and comic set sale. Check this weekly newsletter or on our website for details on the following weeks. There’s a pretty good sized week of comics on the way, so let’s get started:
Don’t know why, but Marvel is shipping two Amazing Spider-Man issues, with parts of two different stories this week. The one week late issue #641 joins #642, ending ‘One Moment in Time‘ in #641, answering questions about Peter and MJ’s future and starting the new ’Origin of the Species’ in #642. The ‘Origin’ story is about the pursuit of pure Goblin blood. Original Green Goblin Norman Osborn has a child (don’t know who the mom is), and this pure strain of Goblin blood is key to somebody’s very evil plan. Daken: Dark Wolverine #1 debuts, starring another knucklehead whose dream it is to control the world. I thought for sure Marvel was going to kill this guy off after Dark Reign. At least in Daredevil #510 a Shadowland tie-in, D.D. is only trying to control New York City as his friends and even some of his enemies try to stop him. New Avengers #4 is all about the magic, and from the looks of the Previews picture, mutant cyclops Leela from Futurama would hit it off with Wolverine, as he sports a brand new, large third eye right in the middle of his forehead.
There’s a triple shot of Batman arriving, starting with a guest star laden Batman #703 that anticipates the ‘Return of Bruce Wayne’ has his friends look back at his legacy. Batman and Robin #14 is a couple months late and has Dick and Damien battling a couple of the original Batman’s more nasty villains, and Batman :Odyssey #3 (of 6) has Alfred helping and The Riddler along with Talia al Ghul hindering Batman’s plan to deal with what’s going on in this eventually 13 part total, Odyssey. Green Lantern #57, a Brightest Day tie-in features a male Star Sapphire called Predator, but not the ugly Aliens vs type, and he wants Carol Ferris. Who doesn’t ? She’s hot, and a superhero, but this guy has her in chains. Not cool. We’ve got a new video game comic, this one based on the Sony hit Ratchet and Clank #1 (of 6), a sci-fi adventure that looks pretty interesting to me. I’ve never seen the game, but we had some action figures a while back that I thought were pretty neat. The characters are done in a style that is slightly animated and I like that. Also, fans of Joss Whedon’s Dr. Horrible rejoice as the new Dr. Horrible trade collecting the Zach Whedon written one-shot along with the three My Space Dark Horse Presents web comics and a BRAND NEW sixteen page story about the Evil League of Evil!!! To wrap up I want to mention we’ll be getting back in a great trade, also from a web comic, called Lackadaisy that I can’t really describe except to say I love it, it’s beautiful , a lot of fun and has cats as characters (and I’m not really a cat person, so that says something). Please check the list below for more of your favorites this week. Oh, and there’s a peanut gallery that wants to have it known that we’re holding a Heroclix game demo on Saturday September 18th at noon to celebrate the new Web of Spider-man set coming out this week. We’ll have causal play, teaching of the game and a good time for all

Tens of thousands of people gathered in our nation’s capital, Washington DC yesterday, in two separate rallies including one around the Lincoln Memorial, to participate in “Read Comics in Public Day”, a celebration to promote the awareness of the joy of reading comics and graphic novels. There were speeches and celebrities and everything!! Millions of pages of comics were read, stories and art, enjoyed. Discussions on who could take who, or which hero was more powerful were taking place all over. A grand time was had by all as it was like everyone was at a big party!!! There was even tea served, but word got out it wasn’t very good. I don’t know how many people had it or maybe even got sick from it, but many folks told others not to drink it. I love tea, but it’s possible it might be dangerous if you don’t know how to brew it for such a large crowd. The beauty of the rallies was that aside from a few underhanded hacks, schemers, and blow-hards, nobody used the huge gatherings for ulterior motives, like political gain, or pushing an agenda besides comic reading. I’m just thrilled that comic reading is making such inroads to the general public. Now, tens, maybe even hundreds of thousands more people have experienced the joy that is comics, and if this keeps up, all will be right with the world. On that note, let’s see what’s coming out this week…

The pickins’ are little bit heavier this week as there was a truck mishap from Diamond that caused some titles to be delayed from last to this week. Odd, though there aren’t many really big items, there are lots of mid range solid titles this week. As a result of the delay, Marvel’s Shadowland story has three pieces, including the main Shadowland #3 as The Punisher, Spider-Man and Moon Knight among others try to stop the newly evil Daredevil and his ninja army The Hand’s crazed rule of Hell’s Kitchen. The delayed Shadowland: Moon Knight #1 (of 4) joins the SL: Elektra one-shot, as Moon Knight has the villain, Profile, getting in his way as he tries to stop Daredevil before he goes to far to be saved, and Elektra is pretty concerned because D.D. Matt Murdock is her former sweetie and she vowed never to get involved with him again. But as everybody knows, chicks dig the bad boys, so now she’ll get involved. Wolverine reclaims a title of his own as the first issue of his new series finds Wolvie in Hell, and without a body to boot! It’s his soul that’s in Hell, but his body is having a great time running amok. That’ll get dealt with later this month when the new X-23 title starts (supposed to be this week, but not). Brian Bendis’ Scarlet #2 is here, but as I haven’t read the first one yet, I don’t know “who she is or what she wants”. Not much to go on. Damn these meager 24 hour days. Incredible Hulks #612 (note the ‘s’ on Hulks) starts bi-weekly shipping and a new story “Dark Son” plus, it features the entire Hulk Family (that’s why the ‘s’) including Bruce Banner as Hulk. There’s also Red Hulk, cousin She-Hulk, sonny boy Skaar, daughter (really, a daughter?) Lyra, and wife(!!!?) or ex-wife (??? divorced Hulk???) Red She-Hulk. That Hulk….a man of the world for sure. And, I thought Marvel was done with the ‘Dark’ crap. Guess not.

Paula usually singles out the first issues of series and minis so I won’t except to mention the weekly for September DC “War” title one shots that star silver and bronze age DC Army heroes, starting this week with Our Army at War #1, as Sgt. Rock’s WWII story is compared and contrasted with a current war story set Afghanistan. Gotta’ throw in the Golden Age heroes too as Freedom Fighters #1, the Uncle Sam led hero group originally from the forties starts with an intriguing story about a found super weapon the was supposed to ensure the Confederates won the Civil War. Didn’t happen, obviously, but who built the weapon and why wasn’t it used are questions the team must unravel the answers to. Buffy’s last season eight story arc “Last Gleaming” starts in this week’s Buffy #36 and it’s written by Buffy creator Joss Whedon, so you know it’ll be a good send-off. There’s five parts to this final story, but I’m wondering if there’ll not be more Buffy after this. Why kill the golden goose? There’s plenty of Buffy fans and readers so I have hopes that things will continue in some way. A nicely priced hardcover featuring Hellboy creator Mike Mignola’s fantastic little story “Amazing Screw-on Head” along with “Other Curious Objects” makes this book the main one for me this week. “Amazing Screw-On Head” originally was a one-shot comic a few years ago, and was then made into a short animated film. It was hilarious and sweet at the same time and I loved it. Can’t wait to see what the “Other Curious Objects” are. That’s it for me… baseball game: M’s vs Twins. We might score today!! Woo Hoo. I still love going, even though the season’s in the dumper. Til next time…

Paula’s Picks

We had a decent turn out for Read Comics in Public day considering I only just found out about it a week ago. Now that I know about it plenty in advance, I should have time to put together something more official for next year. I’ve got a picture up on our Facebook page as well as our website. I’m happy to report that the little boy sitting behind me in the picture received his first ever comic book from me that day! I was reading the Wonder Woman issues by J. Michael Straczynski which were really good! I was a little worried after hearing about what he is doing with Superman but he’s doing a good job with Wonder Woman. She’s in some kind of alternate world and I think she’s supposed to try to get back to the regular universe, but right now, she’s focusing on finding the Amazons that have scattered around the globe.

There’s a lot of new series and one-shots starting this week! Fist though, we are getting in some second printings for Darkwing Duck #1 and True Blood #1. Deadpool Pulp #1 (of 4) takes place during the Cold War. Deadpool has to hunt down a rogue CIA agent with a nuclear suitcase before she turns it over to America’s enemies. Heroic Age: One Month to Live #1 (of 5) is a weekly mini-series that focuses on Dennis, who just found out he’s got 30 days to live and some super-powers. What will he do with them and why are Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four and the Avengers involved? I Am an Avenger #1 (of 5) is an anthology series that stars characters from Avenger’s history. Set in the official movie universe, Iron Man 2 Agents of Shield #1 shows you some things you didn’t see in the movie with Iron Man, Black Widow, Nick Fury and Agent Coulson. Namor First Mutant #1 is a new ongoing series that focuses on Namor (the Sub-Mariner). In this storyline, he must choose between helping his mutant family or his Atlantean family from the vampires. Origins of Marvel Comics X-Men #1 is an anthology that boils each characters origins down to just one page featuring art by great artists like Greg Land, Jill Thompson, Nick Bradshaw and more. I can’t really say much about Punisher Max: Happy Ending #1 without getting in trouble. It’s the end of Spider-Girl in Spider-Girl the End #1 one-shot. Mayday faces off against her clone, April. Get it? May, April? They’re months. Ha! Rumor has is that Taskmaster is now working for Steve Rogers and every evil group is trying to get their hands on his head for the big bounty in Taskmaster #1 (of 4). Thor tries to rebuild Asgard in Thor: For Asgard #1 (of 6). X-Men Curse of the Mutants Smoke and Blood #1 is a one-shot that’s part of the X-Men vs. Vampires story. Some X-scientists have a vampire in their X-lab to do some x-periments when the x-subject x-scapes and all x-hell breaks loose! Let’s hope they can x-terminate it before it x-terminates them.

Just got back from visiting my mom down in the Vancouver/Portland area. Over the past 30 some years visiting family and friends I bet I’ve made that journey back and forth on I-5 at least 150 times and on 90% of them there’s been a construction project of some kind going on somewhere. I wonder if the work will ever be done. Finally, the two lane bottleneck north of Centralia/Chehalis is being widened but who knows how long it’ll take to get finished. Just like on city street projects, it seems as some work has been done, then redone, and then redone again. At least they aren’t building a one million dollar exit ramp to nowhere like they did in Tacoma recently. OOPS! That’s a great way to keep people employed…except maybe the engineers who designed the project. That can’t be an easy job though. My mom’s father (my grandfather, though I never got to meet him as he passed away before I was born) was a civil engineer. So much to worry about, knowing poor design could waste lots of money and maybe cost lives too. And, you have to know lots of math!! Don’t really have a place I’m going with this, just like the exit ramp mentioned above. Just noting the never ending construction projects. Let’s now travel down the road to comics land….

Starting with Marvel, the X-Men are active with a few books including two one-shots that tie in with the Curse of the Mutants story. The first, X-Men Storm and Gambit #1, has the vampire invasion of San Francisco well under way and the skills of these particular X-Men are key to the plan if the team hopes to stop the vampire army. The other stars Marvel vampire hunter/slayer Blade #1 as he tries to gather a team of slayers, but finds pickings are slim as “someone or something” is killing slayers. The mutant hunting Sentinels are featured in X-Men Legacy #239, as are Rogue and Magneto, with a story about a little girl who may or may not be a new mutant. Dark Wolverine #90 is the last issue of the series that Daken stole from his dad. The story gets wrapped up leading to the new Daken title coming next month. I thought they were going to kill this guy off at the end of Dark Reign, but obviously not. In Captain America #609 Bucky is still dealing with old Cap foe Baron Zemo, and in Fantastic Four #582 the past and future are in jeopardy and a couple heroes, including a major player, make the ultimate sacrifice to help set everything right. Though there’s no Shadowland, it wouldn’t be a complete Marvel week without an Avengers book. Yes, there’s a Deadpool book too, Team-Up #890, but I’m not going into detail on that one. Avengers #4 also has time line problems, this at the hands of Kang. The worry is the Avengers may be too late to stop him, but with a time problem, how do you know if you’re too late? Very confusing.

Luckily, in the DC Universe you don’t have to worry about timestream problems, just about Black Lantern zombies, multi-verses, and forests popping up in the middle of cities. Oh wait, Bruce Wayne is lost in time, and so are the Time Masters #2 (of 6 mini) as they travel through time trying to find him. Stuck at Bruce’s first stop in the barbaric age is Rip Hunter and his team of Superman, Booster Gold and Hal Jordan Green Lantern. They seem to need help from Claw the Conqueror to continue their hunt, but Claw’s help might not be the answer. There are some answers in Batman #702, the second part of the story that fills in what happened with Batman between the RIP and Final Crisis stories. I’m really curious what’s next in Green Arrow #3, part of the Brightest Day arc, given the last page of issue #2, because that’s no little boo-boo Oliver’s sporting. More Brightest Day with the two Justice League books, Lost Generation #8 starring former Justice League International team members Booster Gold (again?) Blue Beetle, Fire, Ice and more as they try to pry Blue Beetle killer, Maxwell Lord, out of Checkmate headquarters to face justice. Justice League of America #48 has the conclusion of the five part JLA/JSA crossover as more is found out about the power of the white light. Superman/Batman #75 celebrates the milestone issue with a 56 page special that stars bunches of guests: Legion of Superheroes in the main story (also appearing with Legion issue #4 this week), a Supergirl/Batgirl story written and drawn by Adam Hughes, and much more, including a super pets story starring Ace and Krypto. Also, the long lost last piece of Superman: Secret Origins #6 (of 6) mini arrives, along with new Previews magazine and a new Star Wars mini starring Jango and Boba Fett. Good stuff this week. Please check the list below for more of your favorite titles. Later….

Paula’s Picks

A group has started up that’s trying to promote Read Comics in Public Day. I think it’s genius! That day will be August 28th (this coming Saturday), which is also Jack Kirby’s birthday. I’ll be hanging out at the Federal Way Farmer’s Market from Noon until at least 1pm (longer if there are enough people). So, you should come hang out with me and spread the good word! Don’t forget to bring your comics!!!

Since Rick was out of town, I’ve been dog sitting these last couple of days. It has been pretty interesting, especially since I have cats. Mostly, they stay locked up in a room when Ollie is home. I do have one cat though that seems like a dog himself with how friendly and laid back he is with strangers. We have introduced him to Ollie and Pat (the cat) tolerates him being in his house. He mostly watches Ollie from somewhere up high and every now and again, they sniff noses. It seems to me that Ollie wants to play with the cat, but he’s afraid of getting scratched by the cat so he just paces and whines most of the time.

It’s a pretty big decent sized comic week this week. We’re getting in the new Previews, but not the new Wizard, which is odd. Batman #702 tells untold tale of Bruce Wayne and his adventures between Batman R.I.P. and Final Crisis. There are also some new secrets that lead into the Return of Bruce Wayne. Justice League of American #48 is the grand finale of the JLA/JSA crossover. It’s also a Brightest Day tie-in along with Green Arrow #3 and Justice League Generation Lost #8.

The timestream is broken in Avengers #4 and the Avengers must defeat Kang to put things right. The description says it guest stars everyone. Everyone?!? Does that mean I’m in it? Did you know I was in the newest Ikea catalog too? Just thought I’d share! In X-Men Legacy #239, a group of Sentinels hunts down a girl in Mumbai. But is she a new mutant or something else? Bucky must return to where his life once ended in Captain America #609.

Star Wars Blood Ties: A Tale of Jango and Boba Fett #1 features a story with Jango and Boba together for the first time. With Count Dooku involved, it could be like an episode of 2 ½ Men. For all you Invincible (#74 ships this week too) fans, the Science Dog Special #1 comes out this week. It reprints the back-up stories from issues #25 and #50 and leads into the back-up story for issues #75. Another Invincible tie-in shows up this week with Guarding the Globe #1 (of 6). The Viltrumite War has wiped out many of the members of Guardians of the Globe and they’re looking for new blood! It’s like American Idol, except with superheroes. I love a good train wreck! (Not a real one though).

As a former movie theater manager, I have long followed the weekly movie grosses, or ticket sale money generated that week. I was very curious how the three big movie releases this week would end up, grosses wise, as the three were a diverse group, aimed at very different audiences. For the manly men, and guys like me as well, you had “The Expendables,” an action fest starring Sylvester Stallone, Arnold “The Governator” Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Jason Statham and many more current and former action heroes. For the women, Julia Roberts in “Eat, Pray, Love.” Julia Roberts, ’nuff said. And then the hero of San Diego Comic Con, Scott Pilgrim vs The World, starring Michael Cera, aimed at generally a young audience than either of the other two. Scott Pilgrim had huge buzz from the Con, great critic and viewer reviews and lots more advertising, on the TV channels I watch anyway. Estimated results are in for the weekend and it turns out The Expendables was the big hit with $35 million. Eat, Pray, Love did well in second with $23.5 million, Julia Roberts’ biggest opening in almost ten years. Scott Pilgrim was third of the new releases, and fifth overall, at $10.5 million. This is considered disappointing, as it cost $60 million to make and showed that maybe there wasn’t much audience cross-over from geeky Con types. I think Scott Pilgrim’s numbers also show that audiences either like, or very don’t like Michael Cera. To round out, last week’s The Other Guys starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg was third overall at $18 million and Leonardo DiCaprio in director Chris Nolan’s Inception was fourth at $11.3 million. Paula (targeted audience member) was supposed to go see Scott Pilgrim this weekend. Hopefully she’ll talk about it below. From movies to comics, onward and upward…

Decent week for vampire lovers with HBO’s True Blood #2 from IDW out, along with Dark Horse’s Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Riley one-shot and IDW’s Angel #36. The Buffy: Riley one-shot fills the gap leading into the final Buffy Season Eight arc starting next month and being written by Buffy creator Joss Whedon. The long running and most popular Star Wars title has its final issue as Star Wars: Legacy #50 concludes the “Extremes” story. Dark Horse, for the time being, has decided to go to mini series instead of on-going, for the Star Wars titles. Easier to package as books, for Amazon and the book markets and it’s obvious the comic publishers are catering to the book market. That’s a good thing for overall readership and sales for the publishers, but maybe not so much for small comic shops like ours. Tough to compete against Amazon.

From Marvel, Amazing Spider-Man #640 continues the “One Moment in Time” arc, promising to answer “all” the questions, like “Why is there air?”, and “What’s this stuff coming out of these things on my wrists?” and many others you’re just dying to know the answer to. Hulk #24 has the final battle of the Hulks as Red Hulk dukes it out with Green Hulk. Who shall come out victorious and what will it mean for the vanquished? A must read if you’ve been following the Hulk stories. An Avenger fest this week, with four Avengers titles including New Avengers #3, where the title of “True Master of the Mystic Arts” seems to be up for grabs, Secret Avengers #4, where true to form for an issue #4, “the fate of one hero will be decided” along with the arrival of another. Avengers Academy #3 has the rookie heroes visited by Norman Osborn and his new team of Thunderbolts, who also star in their own issue #147 this week. Uncanny X-Men #527 has part two of “The Five Lights” story, an aftermath of Second Coming and from the looks of it has Emma Frost and Namor, first mutant and man of the sea, in a loving embrace. So, do you like fishsticks?

DC’s Brightest Day story is starting to make it clear that there’s a lot of complex implications behind the revival of particular dead heroes and villains from Blackest Night. More pieces to the puzzle as Justice Society #42 continues the JSA/JLA crossover, with Hal Jordan caught in the middle. Green Lantern Corps #51 stars Green Lanterns Kyle Raynor and John Stewart in a fight on a world controlled by the Cyborg Superman. They need help, but the Lantern available to help them doesn’t want to use his ring power. Wonder why? And in Brightest Day #8 there a fight going as to who will wield the White Lantern. There can only be one. Will it be Deadman? Ronnie Raymond: Firestorm? or someone else? Lastly, in Power Girl #15, Karen, still reeling from personal problems, goes up against some massive new guy called Crash, as he tries to destroy New York City. But, who sent him and why? It’s tough to be the new girl in the big city. That’s it for now. Paula was working on the San Diego Con pictures we’ve been promising to post, so check those out. There’s some pretty good ones as Larissa was in the room for some of the big events. Also, please check the list below for more of your favorite titles releasing this week. Hope you’re not melting in the heat. Next time…

Paula’s Picks

I had a great time in Minnesota! I got to see my parents and lots of extended family since they had a family reunion while I was there. I didn’t go fishing, but I did get to drive my dad’s pontoon boat. My mom sent me home with some delicious zucchini bread as well.

Rick has done his part with Larissa’s San Diego Comic Con picture, so now it’s time to do my part. I’ve been working hard this morning to get them posted, so this week’s newsletter is going to be short and sweet.

I did get to see Scott Pilgrim already. Did you know that if you go to the first showing at Cinemark, it’s only $6 a person? What a deal! And what a great movie! I really enjoyed it. I know a lot of you out there don’t like Michael Cera, but you need to get over it and go see this movie. He was the perfect guy for this role. I just talked with a couple that saw the movie. Before the movie, they both felt like they were done with Michael Cera playing the same role, but he redeemed himself with this one. The writing and acting was amazing and you could tell that the actors had great chemistry.

Dark Horse is hopping on the 1st issue reprints for a dollar bandwagon with Hellboy and Usagi Yojimbo. It’s a great way to try out something new! The Boys has a new offshoot mini-series titled Boys: Highland Laddie #1 (of 6). It tells Hughie’s origin story. Buffy the Vampire Slayer Rile one-shot focuses on filling us in on how Buffy recruited Riley to help the Slayers.

Marvel has a couple of mini-series starting that tie in the Daredevil’s Shadowland story. In Shadowland Daughters of Shadow #1, we will find out Colleen Wing’s secret connection to the Hand. There’s a new Power Man in town in Shadowland: Power Man #1 (of 4). He’s opposing Daredevil’s rule of Hell’s Kitchen and Luke Cage and Iron Fist must find out who he is. Heroes and villains work together to stop Thanos in Avengers & the Infinity Guantlet #1 (of 4).

Rick’s Writin’s
Paula is off in Paul Bunyan country this week, visiting her parents in northern Minnesota. Supposedly, her pop was going to take her fishing in the land of 10,000 lakes, some of the best fishing in the country, maybe the world. She survived her white water rafting experience a few weeks ago, though she can’t swim, and I haven’t heard the loud “BLOOP!!” of her falling out of the boat, so she’s probably fine. Might’ve even caught a fish! All goes well in the shop while she’s gone. I’m thankful the weather cooled down for a bit even though it happened to do so on SeaFair weekend. I sure didn’t want to spend a week and a half without a break, constantly sweating in the hot box our shop becomes when the weather’s too warm. As you can see, the newsletter is done and to me looks like my best job yet of figuring out how to put it together. Practice will eventually make perfect. I promised San Diego Comic Con pictures from Larissa, and we’ll have them up next week. I’ve been writing captions and Paula needs to upload them as I don’t know how. Might learn that one some time along the way too. Nothing really exciting to talk about otherwise as all work and no play makes Ricky a dull boy. Looks like some interesting new comics coming though so let’s get to that:

I’d say the highlight of this week’s offerings would be the first issue of the new on-going Green Lantern Emerald Warriors title.. Part of Brightest Day, the Emerald Warriors stars Guy Gardner, fan favorite Green Lantern Kilowog, along with Arisa as they do some dirty work for Red Lantern Atrocitus. This mission puts them at odds with Hal Jordan and the rest of the Green Lantern Corps, but Guy has his reasons. More Brightest Day with Birds of Prey #4 as it’s a battle of the Canarys, Black vs White, and Dinah has met her match. I’m behind an issue on this one so I still don’t know who this mysterious White Canary is, but it’s not Cassandra Cain or Shiva. The bi-weekly Brightest Day Justice League: Generation Lost #7 has Booster Gold and crew tracking Max Lord to the extremely well fortified Checkmate headquarters. Now they’ve got to figure out how to pry him out of there so he can face justice for his evil deeds. Titans #26 joins the Brightest Day arc as Arsenal pops up along with Deathstroke in a story about a child slavery ring. We’ve got a couple the last issues of the Arsenal: Rise and Fall mini coming in on a re-order, so if you missed them, have a look. Batgirl #13 has Stephanie trying to foil a bank heist by morphing master villain Clayface, while in Adventure #517 Superboy is stressed by his knowledge of his future as Superman.
On the Marvel side Invincible Iron Man #29 has all sorts of armored heroes, from War Machine to Pepper Potts and her armored suit complete with armored nylons and garters. Is Detroit Steel a company or a new armored warrior? And what or who is the new Rescue? The new vampire themed X-Men #2 continues the “Curse of the Mutants “ arc with Dracula and his vampire army invading the X-Men’s new home of San Francisco. Blade the Vampire Slayer is also on hand to help. The Death of Dracula one-shot is supposed to be the start of this “Curse of the Mutants” story, and though we don’t have first prints we do have second prints on hand if you need to catch up. Ed Brubaker continues the time spanning Steve Rogers: Super Soldier #2 (of 4) mini as somebody is pulling strings to keep Steve twisting in the wind, including a confrontation with a long lost first love. Dark Wolverine #89 continues the battle royale with Punisher Franken-Castle and Marvel’s cosmic characters converge in The Thanos Imperative #3 (of 6) mini. I almost forgot Daredevil #509 and the Shadowland story along with Shadowland: Blood on the Street #1 (of 4) mini.
There’s a few smaller press items to mention too. Bongo’s Simpson’s Comic Book Guy The Comic #2 (of 5) features the “Death” of Comic Book Guy. It can’t be true. Comic book guys don’t die, they fade away. Dungeons & Dragons fans , you have a new publisher: IDW, and this week’s new Dungeons & Dragons #0 is only a buck!! Two complete stories give you a taste of what IDW has in store for you when the regular run starts in November. Image’s Morning Glories #1 looks like a high school themed drama, but there quite a bit more to it than that, as over-achieving preppies may be in over their heads in a fancy Academy where much more is going on than planning Homecoming dances and studying for mid-terms. That’s it for now. Gotta open the shop and get this sent out to you folks. Please check the list below for more of your favorites.

The brain isn’t functioning on all cylinders at the moment, so I’m going to go with a new edition of Rick’s Random thoughts: 1. This past week Puyallup hosted it’s annual event (I can’t recall the name) that brings out bunches of beautiful old time classic cars, from early 1900′s Ford Model T’s to 60′s-70′s muscle cars, plus customs jobs and works still in progress of all types. When I see and especially hear those muscle cars and remember the badasses that usually drove them, it makes me laugh at how pathetic the hot car of choice for trouble making punk drivers these days is: the noisy for no reason, no muscle, Honda Civic. It’s like the difference between a Harley and a scooter. Oh the good ol’days…2. Rick Rizz’s never ending and massively over-repeated historic baseball blatherings, mind numbing as they are, are way tougher to take during a month when the M’s go 6-22 and can’t score a run to save their lives. I like how Rick calls a game; it’s the other chatter in between. They’re same old stories and they’ve been the same old stories for years. If I hear him talk about Luis Aparicio any more I’ll scream. My ears start to bleed, just like when I’m forced to listen to Beastie Boys by Paula. 3. We’re working on getting some San Diego Con pictures up on the site, taken by shop friend Larissa, but we’ve run into a small glitch in that we don’t have the proper drives on our computer at the shop to upload the pictures. Paula has a solution, but it will cause a small delay. Stay tuned. Not that many thoughts…brain is dead. Maybe comic talk will help.

Nope…I got nothin’. Actually, I do. For the first time in a very long time, we have a new DC Elseworlds book: Superman: The Last Family of Krypton #1 (of 3). For those of you not familiar with the Elseworlds concept, usually a well known story is used and then a key element is changed to drive the brand new story. Like in JLA: The Nail, an earlier Elseworlds book, where Ma and Pa Kent are driving down the road, about to run across finding the rocket from Krypton with Kal-El in it, but they run over a nail and get a flat tire. Result is, they don’t find Kal-El, somebody else does. And the story goes from there. In this, The Last Family of Krypton, baby Kal-El as well as Papa Jor-El, and Mama Lara come to Earth. Then what happens?? It’s kind of like Marvel’s What If? line, but I think DC tends to use Elseworlds for higher profile stories, as the writer for this one is long time Superman and Legion of Superheroes writer, Cary Bates. The Punisher gets a showcase in Marvel Universe VS the Punisher #1 (of 4) as a plague infested Earth turns everyone and I mean EVERYONE, into cannibals. Yummmy! That Mary Jane sure is tasty. Our story takes place five years later with heroes, villains, monsters, everybody, turned into predatory cannibals, except…The Punisher and a very few survivors. Ol’ Frank is on the hunt. This series will ship twice a month for the next two months. The surprisingly popular (to me anyway) Shadowland #2 (of 5) mini has the battle for New York starting and our heroes, including Spider-Man, Electra, Moon Knight and others along side star player Daredevil, getting help from an unexpected source. Also this week is the Shadowland: Bullseye one-shot, starring D.D.’s favorite thorn in his side. Dark Horse has the second Gold Key/Valiant re-do as the 1960′s and 1990′s hero Magnus Robot Fighter #1 (of 4) mini series written by legend Jim Shooter joins the previously released Solar: Man of Atom. The new Magnus story has our hero battling mobsters that are using “thug-bots” to terrorize their marks. This book, an extra sized 56 pager, also contains the very first complete Magnus story from 1963 created, written and drawn by the great Russ Manning. There’s quite a few more titles of interest coming in, including Amazing Spider-Man #639 with the second part of “One Moment in Time”, Red Robin #15, as Tim is targeted by an assassin, Brightest Day #7 featuring Deadman, Martian Manhunter and Firestorm, among others, Captain America #608 has Bucky dealing with Baron Zemo, who has a big surprise for our new Captain America. Please check the list below for more of your favorites.

Back to the M’s: I didn’t really expect much to happen for us by the trade deadline yesterday, though I was hoping something would. It’s obvious they couldn’t move Kotchman, whom they’ve been showcasing, so Smoak gets sent down to Triple A. That’s okay though, he needs to play regularly and with both Kotchman and Branyon around he probably would sit some. Lopez didn’t go anywhere either, but he’s hurt a bit. The rumors about Figgins being moved to perhaps the Braves, were interesting. Since there’s two months left in the season, let’s get guys in there that we need to see if they’re going to be keepers or not. I want to see Tuiososopo playing everyday now that he’s back up in the bigs. Let’s see if he can play, or not. Same with Adam Moore. Get him up here. We know what Rob Johnson can do by now. What he can’t do is hit. We also know Josh Bard isn’t the guy, so why is Adam Moore still in Tacoma? Give him his shot. I’m not asking for Halman or Mangini or even Ackley yet. Those guys aren’t ready, though I’d rather see strike three swinging rather than called. Hear that Milton? But, Tui has played in Tacoma three years now, without ever getting a legit shot to play in the majors everyday. Will we discard him without ever giving him a chance and then see him blossom into an All-Star with some other team? There are discarded former Mariners contributing to almost every legitimate contending team in baseball, some All-Stars to boot. That’s a Bavasi move, and I don’t want to see that anymore. Jack Z, I expect better from you. Wak’s on the hot seat because you haven’t given him anything to work with. For us fans, let’s shake it up so at least the next two months are interesting. I still have tickets for three more games. I’d like to want to go, not feel I need to go so I’m not wasting my money. If I tried to sell my tickets I’d probably get as many takers as you had for Kotchman.

Yesterday, I ran in my first ever 5k run! I jogged the entire thing (which I didn’t really think was possible). The run was along the Torchlight Parade route with everyone lined up waiting for the parade. They cheered you on and you could slap hands with some of the people as you ran by. It really made you feel like a superstar! One little boy (about 8 or 9) told me to call him later. Very cute! Never did get his number though…

>From DC, we’re getting a new Elseworlds book! I love Elseworlds. For those who don’t know, Elseworlds is a story where something is changed in the regular DCU. I supposed it could be compared to What Ifs? that Marvel does. I like Elseworlds because there is no big history associated with the story. You can know just the basics of the characters and enjoy it. There are quite a few good ones. One of my favorites is Superman: Red Son where Superman’s space ship lands in Russia instead of the US. In this book, he is raised as a communist. This new one is Superman: The Last Family of Krypton #1 (of 3). In this story, not only does Superman make it to Earth, so does Jor-El and Lara!

Another book I’m looking forward to is Baltimore: Plague Ships #1. This comic is written by Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden with art by Ben Stenbeck. It’s based on the novel Baltimore, or, The Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Vampire (which we have in stock). It’s about a soldier in WWI that was attacked by vampires after a devastating battle that killed all of his men and left him near death. It was a really good book. The story was told from the point of view of other men through their stories about Baltimore. It appears that the comic tells the story directly from Baltimore’s point of view.

Marvel is coming out with quite a few fresh new books. Shadowland Bullseye #1 is the latest installment of the Shadowland series (#2 comes out this week as well). This one reveals Bullseye’s secrets. Captain America Forever Allies #1 (of 4) follows Bucky (as Captain America) in an era-spanning story as he re-opens the last, unsolved case of the Young Allies. Chris Claremont takes on his version of the New Mutants in New Mutants Forever #1 (of 5). In Spitfire #1, Lady Jacqueline Falsworth hunts for an old acquaintance in New York with Blade.

I always felt Harry Potter set a bad example for people, with the book reading and cool magic spell casting, wizardry, conjuring, and fancy school uniforms. Now, I’m proven correct as a fan in a Harry Potter T-shirt was arrested at San Diego Comic-Con yesterday for stabbing another poor fanboy over the eye with a pen knife (magical??) because of an argument about one of these knuckleheads sitting too closely to the other knucklehead in a crowded convention room panel while waiting for Seth Rogen to appear. I’m sure it’s partly a result of the crush of attendees that have swamped the Con the last few years as Hollywood has made it the promo event of the year. One more reason also, for San Diego and Con organizers to step up quickly to find more space or risk losing the Comic Con to another, larger venue in some other city. I’m looking forward to hearing reports from our customers that are attending the Con this weekend. We hope to have some pictures to post as well, as at least one of our lucky attendees was planning to take photos galore. There’s been news out of the Con too: Buffy/Firefly’s Joss Whedon will be directing the Avengers movie (check out the group photo at the end of this post), Mark Ruffalo has been cast as the new Hulk, Natalie Portman is in the new Thor movie, Harrison Ford appeared, promoting “Cowboys and Aliens”, Sigourney Weaver was promoting “Paul” a sci-fi movie with Seth Rogen (this is the panel that the above incident happened), and plenty more. We’ll try for a Con news round up next week. Full week of comics this week so let’s have at it.

It’s the start of the cycle as I look at it, with new Previews and Wizard magazines as part of this week’s booty. Lots of Brightest Day and X titles. Let’s start though with Batman: Return of Bruce Wayne #4 (of 6) as Bruce is wearing a cowboy hat cowl in a Wild West ride that gets him a set closer to present day. Kevin Smith’s Batman: Widening Gyre #6 (of 6) concludes this mini, which seems like has been going on forever. Customers have liked the story though, so I hope the conclusion has a good payoff. As stated previously, there’s lots of Brightest Day: Flash #4 has the original Captain Boomerang, and Barry Allen having to prove his innocence for something that may involve the Rogues, to a squad of coppers from the future. Green Arrow #2 finds Oliver Queen playing Robin Hood in his new, white lantern created, forest in the middle of downtown Star City. Green Lantern’s Hal Jordan is along to help as they fend off corruptors trying to take control of the forest. With the Green Arrow appearance we have a triple shot of: Green Lantern #56 features villain Hector Hammond and his quest to free Orange Lantern (greed) Larfleeze from prison. But Why? Green Lantern Corps #50 has former Guardian, current Green Lantern Ganthet making a deal with Red Lantern (rage) Atrocitus. Does it have to do with the appearance of Cyborg Superman? And what is HE up to? No good, you can be sure of that. Throw in the two Justice League titles Generation Lost #6, and Justice League #47‘s continuing crossover story with the JSA and you have six Brightest Day books this week.

Marvel can’t quite match six, but there are four X-titles along with a few other biggies. Thor #612 has our hero and the other Asgardians under attack by a left over from Loki before he took his exit in the Siege story. Punisher, or should I say Franken-Castle #19 continues his battle with dark Wolverine Daken, though in Punishermax #9 he’s regular ol’ Frank again, with Bullseye causing him and Kingpin Wilson Fisk more problems than they like. X -Titles: Both X-Men Legacy #238 and Uncanny X-Men #526 deal with the aftermath of Second Coming. Wolverine Weapon X #15 guest stars Spider-Man, Captain America and many more battle Deathlok, but it seems there’s more than one Deathlok. Hmmmm. Finally, Wolverine Origins #50 concludes this titles run with a double sized issue that’ll lead to the new Wolverine series next month, as well as the new X-23 series also coming in the near future. Please check the list below as I’m sure there’s many more great titles we didn’t have a chance to talk about on the list. Til next time…

Paula’s Picks

I mentioned last week that I created my own Scott Pilgrim avatar. You can see it on our website in last weeks’ post (just click on the image to see it big). Well, I also got Rick to make one (that will be with this weeks’ post on our website). We’ve decided to have a contest! Go to the Scott Pilgrim website (www.scottpilgrimthemovie.com), click on Avatar Creator, create your avatar, click on Finish/Share and then click Send to a Friend and email it to newsletter@spycomics.com. In order for it to be a part of the contest, you also have to send in a picture of yourself. We’ll post everyone’s pictures and avatars on the website and everyone can vote on what they think the best likeness is. The winner will get a Scott Pilgrim graphic novel of their choice. You have until the end of the day on Saturday, July 31st to send in your avatar and picture for the contest! Get ready, set, go!!

We’ve got a ton of comics coming in this week, but not many number 1 issues. Although, come to think of it, that’s probably because of San Diego ComiCon. They don’t want anything cool to take away from the many announcements that are coming out. Such as Gillermo del Torro is going to be writing/producing a reboot of Disney’s Haunted Mansion, Cowboys & Aliens movie in the works (starring Harrison Ford & Daniel Craig) and Red Hulk joining the Avengers (there’s 1 comic bit of news!).

Marvel has Ultimate Comics Mystery #1 (of 4) coming out. Ultimate Enemy has revealed his plan and now the mystery the heroes of the Ultimate Universe must solve is “Who is this Ultimate Enemy guy anyway?”

In Time Lincoln: Fists of the Fuhrer #1, Lincoln continues to travel through time to right wrongs. In this case, it’s a battle of fists between Lincoln and Hitler on top of Mount Rushmore!

Torchwood gets its very own comic series this week. This issue features a story written by John Barrowman (Captain Jack)!

After the amazing sales jump Archie saw with the Archie Marries storyline, Archie Comics comes out with a new series focusing solely on his marriage(s). Life with Archie: Married Life #1 has half the issue dedicated to his married life with Betty and the other half with Veronica.

Image has a few number 1 issues coming out this week. Pilot Season Stellar #1 is about a girl used for scientific experiments that give her powers, but make her poisonous to humans. Now, she must leave Earth and tries to use her powers for good. Artifacts #1 (of 13) is an epic storyline starring some of Images most well known characters: Witchblade, Darkness, Magdalena and more!

Radical also has a bunch of new comics coming out as well! After Dark #1 (of 3) is a futuristic space story involving mercenaries and a woman who might be able to save the world, but is the world worth saving? The Rising #0 is a $1 preview of an upcoming mini-series about humans that have been enslaved by aliens finally rising to take back their lives. Time Bomb #1 (of 3) is written by Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray with art by Paul Gulacy.

San Diego Comic Con is just around the corner and again, I’m not going. Bummer. I’ve been lucky enough to go four times, but I haven’t for the last couple three years. Most of you know that Hollywood and many other non-comic entities have taken over the San Diego Comic Con, with the actual comic part of the con becoming almost forgotten and getting smaller and smaller show floor wise. I admit that the main reason I liked to go was to see the TV and movie panels, but this was before Hollywood realized their huge impact and pulled out all the stops. You used to be able to get into the presentations, but no more now, unless you want to wait in line all day and hope you might get in. And you want to get in because there’s big names galore. To give you an idea, here’s a link to what CBS and Showtime have scheduled. There’s plenty more too, Paula is mentioning the Scott Pilgrim movie and I know Michael Cera will be at the Con.. Tickets for this year were sold out last November, but as I’m considered an industry member we have tickets available to us. The trick is getting a reasonably priced hotel room close enough to the Con . That’s near impossible with the flood of people now attending. You may also have heard that due to the Con selling out so early and having maxxed out it’s convention center capacity, plus the lack of hotel space, that there is consideration about moving the Con to the Anaheim/ LA area when the Con’s San Diego convention center contract runs out in the near future. San Diego politicians didn’t really seem worried about that, though San Diego merchants were. Seems the merchants knew that Con goers spent money and it was guesstamated to be about $60 million. The politicians figured it to be about $40 million, so no big deal really. Then there was an independent study done and it turns out Comic Con attendees put $160 million into the San Diego economy. That’s big money, so now there’s going to be a fight to keep the Con in San Diego. Hotels have promised more affordable rooms and the convention center is supposed to be expanded, but that’ll take a few years. Some folks like the Anaheim option, but there’s fear it won’t be the same. I don’t know how it’s going to end up, but if you want to be sure to the “San Diego” Comic Con, you’d better go in the next year or two. Let’s see what’s coming out this week….

Those of you that like to track your collections value will be please to know that this year’s Overstreet Comic Price Guide is coming in, a couple months later than usual. It’s usually in around March or April, and I don’t know why it was later this year, but it is. On the Marvel front, if you’re an Avengers fan, this week is for you. Double dip of Bendis written fun as Avengers #3 has the team going to the future to see what their children have wrought, and it’s not good. But all may not be what it seems, with Kang in the mix. There’s some cool guest stars as well. For New Avengers #2, there’s magic in the air, and it’s not stable. Opening alternate dimensions, disappearing team mates and big ugly villains are all part of this one. So is Ben Grimm, The Thing!! Two Avenger books from the Ultimate universe too: Ultimate Comics Avengers 2 #5 (of 6) deals with emissaries from Hell collecting souls, including “demonic” Ghost Rider, and in Ultimate Comics New Ultimates (Avengers) #3 (of 5) we have THOR!! Lots has happened to Peter Parker since “Brand New Day” wiped out a lot of recent Spidey history. But, there were a lot of unanswered questions, and starting with Amazing Spider-Man #638, many are going to be answered. The next four issues will be extra-sized and deal with all the loose ends from changes in the Spider-Man story arcs and how all those changes affected the Marvel Universe as a whole. I didn’t know it, but I guess Daken: Dark Wolverine is the reason Frank Castle: The Punisher was all carved up and put back together as Franken-Castle. The two meet again in Dark Wolverine #88, the first of a four part cross-over story “Punishment”, as ol’ Frank gets his chance to settle up with Daken.

Bruce Wayne has been lost in time but he is slowly making his way towards now. There’s a crew looking for Bruce however, not trusting he’ll get back all safe and sound. Their story is Time Masters: Vanishing Point #1 (of 6), as the crew put together by the Time Master himself, Rip Hunter scourers the time stream looking for the lost Dark Avenger. Along for the search are: Superman, Green Lantern Hal Jordan, and Booster Gold. First though, the crew needs to figure out where/when in the time continuum did Bruce go after the events in Final Crisis. Power Girl #14 has Karen Starr dealing with missing employees in her company, including her chief financial officer…and her money. As Power Girl, she has a Maxwell Lord problem. I was worried when the creative team changed over last issue, but I liked that last issue, and the big worry for me about the art was un-founded. The new artist, Sami Basri, is very good and some of the jokes were still there too. Power Girl is pulling double duty this week as Justice Society #41 has the second part of the cross-over with the Justice League, as part of the Brightest Day story. As for that, Brightest Day #6 also arrives as we find out more about the heroes returned from the dead at the end of Blackest Night, and why? those particular heroes. Fans of vampires named Bob and Fred, not Edward can rejoice as HBO’s True Blood #1 makes its comic debut in this on-going (I believe) series by IDW. As it is IDW, we can expect a bunch of True Blood spin-off comics in the not too distant future. That’s it for now. Please check the list below for more of your favorites coming in this week. Have a great week.

Paula’s Picks

I have been obsessed with Scott Pilgrim lately. I started reading the first book on Tuesday and am already half way through book 4. I had heard of the book before from many people saying it was a really good read, but it just sounded kinda hokey when it was described to me. Anyway, we picked up a bunch of the books to get ready for the movie that’s coming out soon. I figured that I would just read the first book so that I could describe it to anyone that asks. I finished it in about an hour and couldn’t wait to read the rest of them. The story is about this guy, Scott Pilgrim that wants to go out with this girl, Ramona. But in order for her to be his girlfriend, he has to defeat her 7 evil exes. It is really quirky and if I hadn’t seen the trailer first, I would have thought that there was no way for it to be a movie, but the trailers I’ve seen have been fantastic! I have become a little obsessed. I even made a Scott Pilgrim version of me on the movie website. I hope to get finished with the current books before the new Scott Pilgrim volume 6 comes in on Wednesday. Then, it’s only a couple of weeks until the movie, August 13th. Check our Facebook page for a trailer!

Another book I’m really looking forward to is Welcome to Tranquility One Foot in the Grave #1 (of 6). This is the third part of a series by Gail Simone about a retirement community for superheroes and super villains. It also involves their children and grandchildren as well. If you haven’t read the series, you should be starting this one and I actually can’t tell you much about the current story without ruining it. It should be said that these old superheroes and villains are quite old and definitely have their quirks.

In Time Masters: Vanishing Point #1 (of 6), Superman, Green Lantern and Booster Gold travel through time trying to find Batman before reality gets torn apart by his disappearance in time.

In Lady Deadpool #1, the tanking economy has caused cable TV to go away and she’ll do anything to get it back.

True Blood gets its own comic this week! The first issue of the 6 issue mini series comes in this week. This issue finds Sookie and others trapped in Merlotte’s bar waiting for a storm to pass. It turns out they’re just food for an entity that feeds on raw energy. From what I can tell, these stories are completely new additions to the True Blood universe.
