Rick’s Writin’s

If I’d have know in January and February, when we were having spring like warm weather, that we’d be paying for it after by having four months in a row of March like cold, crappy, rainy weather, I’d have said “Bring on the snow!!” I think we’re going to get ripped off on our summer this year. It seems to happen around here every few years or so that we only get two months of summer. Read the rest of this entry »

Paula’s out enjoying the sun, so it’s up to me, again, to deliver the goods. As has been noted before, I’m kind of challenged by the process of putting the newsletter and the shipping list that goes with it. I’m pleased to say that this time went much smoother that previous ones, though I’m not out of the woods yet. As for the nice weather, it’s about freakin’ time!! I’ve seen enough grey to last me a long, long time.
Next Saturday June 19th we’re helping sponsor the KGRG Summer Riot music concert being put on by our radio pals at Green River Community College, KGRG. It’ll be at Jazz Bones in Tacoma (2803 6th Ave.), starting at 1:00 pm. Paula will be there handing out comics and other stuff, and we’ll be providing door prizes too. There’s a bunch of local bands playing, including headliner Window Pane and about seven more. It’s $8.00 at the door, and all ages are welcome. This show was originally scheduled to be at Green River, and outdoors too, but some knucklehead administrator at Green River decided to schedule a construction project that required all the power on the campus to be turned off, the same day as the concert, but they didn’t bother to tell anyone until just last week.

Rick’s Writin’s

Went out to my car this morning and noticed a spider about the size of a pinky fingernail had made a web off of my driver’s side view mirror.  I don’t like to mess with spiders, and not because I’m afraid of them. Unless they sneak up on me, like in the shower or on my bed, I leave them alone. Sometimes I’ll scoop them up and put them outside, but I don’t kill them. They’re smart, the webs can be beautiful, and they run away when you try to kill them, so they’re aware, more so I think than just self preservation. I had one that lived for two years in a door jam of an apartment I lived in. I used to feed it ants and flies. The spider on my car chose a poor spot for a web, but I decided to let nature take its course and got in my car to do my errand. As we drove, the web came apart, into a strand, and that spider clung to it, waving in the wind. It’s well known how strong spider webbing is, though you don’t want to be dangling at the end of it because you might get your neck snapped. The webbing held stuck to the car and even up to thirty five MPH, that spider hung on. Eventually, he climbed up the strand and grabbed onto the mirror itself. When I was all done with my errand, he was still there. Talk about resilient. I figured he had enough adventure so I prodded him onto a leafy tree branch to find a new home. I was pretty impressed, and again, nature had fascinated me. Then, Ollie puked all over the inside of my car. Fun times! Let’s get to the comics talk.

We will be closed Monday, May 31st for Memorial Day. New Comics Day will be Thursday, June 3rd, this week due to the holiday.

Looks like the sun is thinking of popping out for an appearance, so perhaps this Memorial Day weekend won’t be totally typical Seattle dreary. Of course, the holiday bumps new comics day to this coming Thursday (June 3rd) instead of the usual Wednesday so be aware of that please.  It’s been kind of a busy week pop culture wise, not counting real world problems like the never ending oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico. Two actors, icons in their own way, passed away: Gary Coleman and Dennis Hopper. Read the rest of this entry »
Paula’s Picks

Since I took last weekend off, it is Rick’s turn to take this weekend off. He reported in that he’s finally seen Iron Man 2 and enjoyed it.

It’s Previews week, so there’s loads of stuff coming in including the new Wizard.

For big events, there are a couple of X-Men Second Coming books: X-Force #27 and X-Men Second Coming Revelations Blind Science #1. We’ve also some second printings coming in for X-Force #26 and Uncanny #523.

We’ve also got some Heroic Age books coming out. Since things have been all doom and gloom for the Marvel heroes for the past few years, things are looking up and the heroes are feeling more hopeful and optimistic of the future. The new Secret Avengers #1 is a part of the new Heroic Age as are Fantastic Four #579 and Thunderbolts #144.

DC fans, don’t worry, things are looking up for your heroes too with Batman on his way back through time in The Return of Bruce Wayne #2. It looks like he’s either celebrating the first Thanksgiving or burning witches in the latest issue. I hope it’s Thanksgiving. In Green Lantern #54 (part of Brightest Day), the New Guardians are getting used to Earth as their new home and hijinx abound as Hal deals with Larfleeze.

We getting in the super sized Wednesday Comics hard cover this week. I’m pretty stoked to see this book. I never got around to reading the Wednesday Comics as they were coming out, but I like the concept. I might give it a try now that they’re all together.

Some other books I’m looking forward to are Incorruptible #6, Guild #3 and Fraggle Rock #2.

Don’t forget that Lost is on tonight! Can’t wait! I think I’m going to have warm beer and imaginary peanut butter (yup, I stole that one)! Read the rest of this entry »

After about 30 tries (Yeah, Paula….30) I was finally able to get the shipping list into a usable format for this newsletter and our in store use. At least I’m not a quitter.  And,  it’s lucky I don’t have a destructive, computer screen punching temper. All better now though. Otherwise, this has been a very nice week. The weather was beautiful and there was good activity in the shop. I’ve been hobbling around a bruised right foot for a bit, but that seems to be getting better as well. Did have a quandary though that I though I’d put out to you folks. Is it okay to put an envelope in a stranger’s mailbox with a twenty dollar bill and a note the says” My dog really likes to poop in your yard, and I don’t clean it up. Sorry.” Or, is twenty dollars too much? Oh, and it’s the back yard that opens to an alley, not his front yard. Just wondering. There’s a party to talk about comics wise …

I hope you all have sent or will be sending your good wishes and loves to your mommies today. If you haven’t or somehow totally forgot today (May 9th) is Mother’s Day, you’d best get it together. We’ll wait…. (No, we won’t. What knucklehead forgets Mother’s Day?? I’ve been late with the card a couple times, but I’ve never forgotten, and I always call). There’s a big week of comics I want to get to, and I’ve got a ball game to go to today, so random thoughts today. 1. I admit I’m dismayed with how things are going with the M’s. My God, can’t anyone get a hit when it counts?? Guti and Ichiro can’t do everything. Nobody else is hitting their own weight. Really…I’d like to check player weights against batting averages and I’ll bet Gutierrez and Ichiro are the only ones hitting over their weight. 2. It has always bugged me that the Car Toys stores biggest print and radio advertising goal is to get customers to buy cell phones from them. Ever since consumers having a cell phone became easy, Car Toys has pushed and sold the hell out of them. Now that there is a crack down by the law on distracted idiot cell phone talking and texting drivers, many probably supplied with cell phones from Car Toys, what does Car Toys start to push…hands free phones and other devices for drivers to stay distracted and still comply with the law. They just don’t get it. You’re not supposed to be playing with TOYS when you’re driving a CAR!!! Oh, are you back??? We waited. (Ha!) 3. I mean, 1. I really want to see Iron Man 2. Good reports from those of you who’ve seen it. I’m told you need to stay until after the credits for a bonus scene, just like the first one, so don’t leave early. 4. If you were on a sinking life raft and had to throw one of these “comedians” overboard to save you and the rest, who’d go first: Dane Cook, Carlos Mencia, Carrot Top, or Howie Mandel? Or is that a no win situation and you should just chuck yourself over? On to comics… Read the rest of this entry »
Rick’s Writin’s

OH MY GOD!!! That was SOME Free Comic Book Day!!!! THANK YOU! to everybody that came out and made this year’s FCBD the best we have ever had! We’ve never had so many people in the shop at one time. You folks were also SO generous with your purchasing that I could barely keep up with the line at the register. That’s a problem I would love to have more often. Paula and our helpers were quite busy working to find that one thing you were looking for, and most of you found something. KGRG Radio was on hand with a remote live broadcast and handed out all sorts of goodies to go with the Free Comics that we had. The broadcast was during KGRG’s usual Saturday morning J-Rock show, which features music and covers from Japanese bands and themes from anime shows. We had that streaming in the shop, which added to the energy. They mentioned the shop quite a bit during the broadcast too, and I have to admit, hearing that gave me quite a kick. Everything went smoothly, and we ended up smashing the store single day sales record!! WOOO HOO!! Paula and I were exhausted after and hungry too. For dinner we went to the Peking Wok Restaurant up the street and had a nice Chinese food meal. They do a great job there. We had Sizzling Rice soup among other things, which Paula had never tried before. It was sizzling and excellent. Lots of seafood in it. After, I don’t know about Paula, but I went home, took a shower, then fell asleep in my chair watching TV. All in all, a great day. Thanks again to you all!!
